Forest Ranger adventures

Every Forest Holidays location has a resident Forest Ranger. An expert in the local wildlife who is ready and eager to share their woodland skills and the secrets of the forest with you. Stalk through the night time forest trying to spot elusive animals, discover where the wild garlic grows or how to brew a pine needle tea. Your Forest Ranger will bring the forest alive for you.
Forest Explorer

Discover a wealth of ideas to enjoy the forest

Make the most of your escape to the forest by starting your getaway with Forest Explorer. On this activity, join our expert Forest Ranger to discover a wealth of ideas for enjoying our forest.

They’ll show you all the best trails, point out the local flora and fauna, give you a fun taster of the history of the area, and of course, highlight the best routes to the local pub! Our Forest Ranger really is the ambassador of the forest and we don’t want you to miss a thing.

Forest Survival Basics & Ultimate Forest Survival

A chance to develop your survival skills

Have you always wondered exactly what it would take to survive in the great outdoors? Keep the rule of threes in mind; 3 hours, 3 days, 3 weeks. Test and challenge your Forest Survival skills during a packed session with our expert Forest Ranger making sure you have the know-how to keep to the rule of threes!

Learn how to find the best shelter location and build it, before divining the safest places to find water and lighting a fire with modern and traditional methods. Can you boil water to make some pine needle tea (or hot chocolate!) and toast your marshmallow? Depending on the season and natural resources our Forest Rangers may also show you how to make nettle rope, or forage for wild food.

Forest Night Vision

Discover the forest by night

Venture out with the Forest Ranger stalking through the woodland to try and catch a sound or glimpse of wildlife with your night vision equipment – patience and stealth are key. After spying some nocturnal wildlife in its natural habitat, pick our expert Forest Ranger’s brains on the wild forest before heading back to your cosy cabin.

Mini Forest Ranger

Learn everything you need to be a certified Mini Forest Ranger!

Kids, become a Mini Forest Ranger! Bring some grown-ups and join our Forest Ranger on a short woodland walk. You’ll learn loads, in fact – everything you need to be a Mini Forest Ranger! Catch bugs in our mini beast pots for a closer look, learn all about plants and trees, play games and make forest crafts. At the end take home a Mini Forest Ranger badge and certificate.

Meet your Forest Ranger

Andy, Ardgartan Argyll

Andy - aka ‘the batman’ - lives and works in the Argyll Forest. He’s a mountain man with a passion for Scotland’s natural wildlife. When he’s not leading forest walks, he may be found canoeing on Loch Long.

Andy's favourite British wild animals:

Why do owls find it hard to find a partner in the west coast? Because, sometimes, it's too wet to woo!

Sara, Beddgelert

Sara is Beddgelert’s Forest Ranger. She’s come to us from an outdoor guiding background, teaching anything from rock climbing to sea kayaking. This lead to a passion for conservation and the protection of Britain’s wild places, and she now studies Conservation at Bangor university. Her hobbies include climbing, hiking, trail running, paddling and hanging out with her two dogs, Atlas and Seren. 

Favourite British animal: Otter

Fun Fact: From a young age could tell the difference between male and female spiders in almost every species


David, Blackwood Forest

Blackwood Forest is home to our Forest Ranger, David. Having worked with conservation groups and as a lifetime Scout, David is an expert of all things wildlife and nature! Accompanying you on your Forest Ranger activities, David will show you all the hidden workings of the forest!

Exciting projects:
David created and managed a woodland, meadow and pond for his local school!

Alison, Blackwood Forest

Alison is a forest school practitioner and early years educator. She is passionate about the benefits for everyone to enjoy the beautiful woodlands we have at Blackwood Forest.

Her background is in Countryside and Wildlife Management and she has taught practical habitat management at Sparsholt College.

She has a particular interest in butterflies and is very pleased that Blackwood Forest hosts the Purple Emperor butterfly.


Gerry, Forest of Dean

Meet Gerry, your Forest Ranger at the Forest of Dean. Originally from Kilkenny in Ireland, Gerry has a varied and exciting history. Having spent a number of years in the military followed by years of worldwide travel adventures, Gerry is full of stories, knowledge and wisdom! Join him for a number of Forest Ranger activities during your stay and learn about the secrets of the forest!

Jack, Strathyre

If you're staying with us at Strathyre, you'll meet Jack, your friendly Forest Ranger. Jack shares the skills and knowledge he's picked up during his time in countryside management. His passion and enthusiasm for nature is contagious - join him for a unique and memorable Forest Ranger activity during your stay!

John, Sherwood Forest

Meet John, stunt performer, radio presenter and best of all, Forest Ranger at our Sherwood Forest location. John is a big fan of walking and wildlife watching and is also an expert in fungi and foraging!

Mark, Thorpe Forest

Our Forest Ranger at Thorpe Forest, Mark, joins us after 24 years as a medic in the Royal Navy and 7 years in the ambulance service. Now an outdoor activities instructor with the Scout Association, he runs a large Sea Scout Group in Norwich where he lives. Mark's hobbies include growing his own fruit and veg at home and keeping tropical fish.

Martin, Deerpark

Deerpark Forest Ranger Martin loves to share his vast knowledge of the local history, flora, fauna and geology. He can’t get through his day off without a pint of bitter either!
