Can you imagine the thrill of climbing a steep rock face to reach the top and take in the views? Or delving into the deepest cave to discover the beauty of an underground world? Do you relish the feeling the wind in your face, your heart pumping, as you challenge yourself to achieve something amazing? Are you ready for an adventure?
If you love the thrill of an action packed adventure holiday for your family or friends, book a cabin in the forest, where you’ll find an activity for every age, and the chance to try something new or build on skills you already have. It’s time to discover amazing adventures in Britain’s forests.
How low can you go?
Deep below the fertile forests of the UK are some of the most beautiful sights imaginable – but do you dare to find them? Exploring caves is not for the faint-hearted, but there are various ways to discover just how low you can go.
Start by exploring the showcaves of Clearwell Caves near Forest of Dean, a deep labyrinth of old mines that you can explore at your own pace, discovering wonders such as Skeleton Pool; a tranquil underground lake.
If you’re ready for more of a challenge, how about a gentle introduction to caving for children age 8 and over? Walk and crawl your way through passages to discover beautiful natural caverns.
Exploring the treetops
If you prefer to be above ground, climb up to the treetops with Go Ape. You’ll find wobbly bridges, rope swings and zip lines back to the ground. There are gentle courses for younger children and more extreme courses for adults, and there is a Go Ape near to most of our forest locations.
Stay at Beddgelert and climb even higher than the treetops with rock climbing adventures in Snowdonia. Remember that what goes up must come down – with the help of your experienced guide and a spot of abseiling.
Reach to the sky
Still not high enough for you? Then leave the earth far below and fly through the clouds on a private microlight experience. See the whole of Blackwood Forest laid out below, as you soar through the sky.
A little bit faster
Are you planning an adventure holiday for a your group of friends? Something to make hearts race and adrenaline flow? How about the fastest zipline in the world, near to Beddgelert in Snowdonia? A real test for adrenaline junkies, this glorious zipline flies out over Penrhyn Quarry, 500m above the deep blue of the quarry lake. Zip World, also near Beddgelert, will be the making of a weekend break you’ll talk about for years to come.
Quite a lot wetter
A family activity break doesn’t necessarily have to involve getting wet – but we think it makes it all the more fun. For a gentle group activity, plan a canoe trip down the river at Thorpe Forest; ramp it up a little with some river sledging at Ardgartan Argyll, or go extreme with gorge walking through crevices in the mountains of Scotland or Snowdonia.
Less adrenaline, more action
Thrill seeking, adrenaline pumping adventures are all very well, but sometimes you feel like an activity that’s a little calmer, but with plenty of action. Feel like a famous outlaw as you shoot a bow, or crossbow in Sherwood Forest, or modernise your skills with a spot of air rifle shooting at Keldy.
Two wheels or four?
The beauty of forest trails is that they offer cycling adventures for all abilities and the opportunity to discover Britain at its best. You can enjoy a cycling holiday at any of our locations. Try the family-friendly cycle paths through the woods, taking your adventurer’s ration pack – or picnic – with you, from our Good to Go range, or ask the team for the best route to the local pub for a well-deserved lunch.
More serious cyclists will find plenty of magnificent routes for a full day outing across the North York Moors starting out from Cropton. You could even challenge yourself to try part of the route for the 2019 Tour de Yorkshire.
If two wheels are good, are four wheels better? Find out when you go quad biking, one of our third party adventures with Suffolk Activities Quad Biking, about 20 minutes’ drive from Thorpe Forest. Suitable for ages 12 and over, this is a great action activity for teenagers.
Forest fun with your Forest Ranger
Families looking for adventure will find the forest is full of activities – and our Forest Rangers are on hand to help you find it. Want to develop your survival skills, learn how to build a shelter, forage for wild food, and light your campfire? Then the forest is the right place to learn on a Forest Survival Adventure. The little ones can collect bugs in their explorer pots on a Mini Forest Ranger adventure and, you can explore the forest at night on a Forest Night Vision adventure.
Join us at Deerpark for a tour of the explosive mines, where you’ll learn the stories behind ruins and watermills, or join the children as they discover more about the natural world around them, with Geology Rockhounds and Pond and Stream Dipping. For a truly special adventure, head north to Strathyre for a private Forest Ranger tour, ending with a luxury picnic in a secret spot known only to a select few.
