An alternative New Year's Eve

Imagine it's New Year’s Day. How do you feel? After the excitement of Christmas, we often start January in need of a rest. This year, let’s do something different – and begin the year feeling renewed and refreshed, ready for the year ahead.

New Year is the traditional time for making resolutions for the next 12 months – with some of the most common ones focusing on our health and wellbeing. Well, let’s get that kickstarted from day 1, with an alternative New Year’s Eve. Here’s the plan:

31 December 

Spending New Year in the forest is a great way to get friends and family together for a special evening, and still have plenty of time and space to relax. Pack the car – don’t forget your wellies – and set off on your journey to one of our forest locations. Take your time, this trip is about slowing down. 

Checking in couldn’t be easier. Just stop in at the Forest Retreat to see our friendly team, who’ll have your information ready. As you step inside your cabin you’ll notice three things – the delicious warmth from the underfloor heating, plenty of space for everyone including the dog, and, through the window, your waiting hot tub.

It’s the end of a year – and it’s been a long one. So, relax and enjoy some simple entertainment. As the evening draws in, light the log burner, and gather around the table for a games night challenge – a great way to get the laughter flowing with friends and family. 

You might have already planned your evening meal – and it’s easy to put together in your cabin kitchen. But why cook when you can order pizza or a curry to be delivered to the door. 

Now there’s one last decision to make; how will you see in the New Year? Will you gather around the TV to count down with the chimes of Big Ben or will you be enjoying the peace of the forest as you sink deep into your hot tub, with the starlit sky above you?

New Year’s Day

After a deep, soothing sleep, waking up will feel slow and luxurious. Birdsong and sunshine are a wonderful way to start a new year – along with coffee, croissants, and fresh orange. Have you already started on your first resolution for the year – more sleep and a healthier breakfast every day?

It’s time for the second resolution – more exercise. So, jump onto your bikes and head out along the woodland tracks. There are gentle routes and challenging routes – it’s all down to how you feel.

The week ahead.

Since the new year has started so well, perhaps there’s time for another resolution or two as well. Are you going to try something new this year? You’re in the right place to get started. Each of our forest locations has a variety of activities to try, from archery, kayaking*, and llama trekking* to photography lessons* and Forest Survival skills. Some of these might not be available for the first week of January, but there’s no harm in writing your list while inspiration strikes – and giving yourself an excuse for another forest break later in the year. *available at selected locations.

Children will have a wonderful time in the forest where, let’s face it, it will likely be a little muddy. So, let them splash in the puddles and build dens under a tree, while you breathe in and embrace the peace and serenity around you. Then, stop by the Forest Retreat for a delicious hot chocolate and a slice of cake. 

Make time for a Forest Ranger adventure and start your year with a deeper connection to the natural world. Did you know, it’s the Year of Green Action in 2019, part of the government’s 25-year plan to improve our natural environment?

If you’re child-free (or you can get away for an hour), then head on back to your cabin for an indulgent treat. Shed the stress of the last year with an In-cabin spa treatment. Your personal therapist will calm tired muscles, sooth furrowed brows, or refresh aching feet with a variety of treatments. 

Before you leave

Before your stay ends, take a last walk down your favourite trail. Take the time to close your eyes and immerse yourself in the calm of nature. You’ve started 2019 with plenty of fresh air, exercise, and some treats. Stress levels down, mind calm, and creative energies renewed. That’s it - you’re ready for the year ahead.
