Discover legends of heroic deeds and derring-do deep in the heart of Sherwood Forest, where sunshine dapples the woodland floor and streams trickle merrily through the trees. Historic castles, mysterious caves and deep, dark dungeons or starry skies and leisurely lie ins, it’s your choice. Enjoy a long weekend in your Nottinghamshire cabin.
A Friday night barbecue
As you drive into Sherwood Forest let the peace and calm seep into your bones as the stress of the week falls away. With a chilled bottle of wine, light the barbecue, and settle onto your decking to decide just where to start your weekend - although the children will already be out exploring the forest surrounding your cabin. With a pre-ordered meat pack you don’t even need to go shopping for your Friday night meal.
Saturday morning with Robin Hood
Wake up gently to the sound of birdsong, and pop into the Forest Retreat for a full English breakfast. Fully fuelled for the day ahead, head off to Nottingham, one of the most popular tourist cities in the Midlands, for a mix of medieval history and modern adventure.
The first legends of Robin Hood appear around 1377, and the castle of the period would have been a major royal fortress. This building was destroyed in the 16th century, and today in its place stands a ducal mansion, perched on a high rock over the city. Visit the castle today, and discover art galleries and beautiful Victorian gardens.
Saturday afternoon in the caves
Descend into the city centre, making sure to snap a picture with the famous statue of the outlaw himself. Stop at The Canalhouse for lunch and enjoy sights of the canal, which even extends into the building.
Nottingham was once famed for its ales and beer, due to the extensive cave system that was used to store the ales, and plenty of local breweries help to continue the tradition. There are even three pubs, each claiming to be the oldest in the town, if not the country. Ye Olde Trip to Jerusalem is one of the best known, with the interior extending back into caves that claim to have been brewhouses for the original castle. It’s well worth a visit.
After a refreshing brew, go even deeper below the city on a tour of the extensive cave system. Discover a medieval tannery, an air raid shelter and a Victorian slum – the caves have provided sanctuary for hundreds of years of British history.
Saturday evening treats
Head back to your cabin to spend some time relaxing in your hot tub, and let your feet recover from the day’s sightseeing. If you’re feeling truly indulgent, enjoy a Personal Chef experience. Our professional chef will prepare a meal in your own cabin - and do all the washing up too.
Sunday morning in the forest
First, a gentle stroll through the forest to the Sherwood Pines Visitor Centre, where you can
discover the forest from the treetops with Go Ape. If you prefer to do your exploring at ground level, you can hire bikes from the centre, and head out into the 3,300 acres of forest.
A Sunday afternoon picnic
After a morning of fresh air and exercise, we know you’ll be ready for a feast. Book a family picnic, and we’ll have everything waiting for you. A traditional hamper, filled to the brim with tasty pork pies and scrumptious scones, refreshing lemonade and mouth-watering fresh fruit.
Relax in a flower covered meadow as you eat your fill, and let the children splash through streams and play a game of frisbee. Once your energy levels are restored, learn how to build a shelter, cook nettle soup on a campfire, or capture forest beasties on a trip with the Forest Ranger.
Sunday evening movie night
Kick back and allow your hot tub to sooth your muscles as you watch the sun set and the stars prick the night sky. Then it’s time to enjoy a family evening of movies and games in your cabin.
