Why Your Forest Reading List Should Contain These Books

A Forest Holiday is the ideal opportunity to lose yourself in a book. This reading list, put together with the help of our friends at Penguin, Puffin and Ladybird, is perfect for your woodland break.

"If you don’t like to read, you haven’t found the right book." ― J.K. Rowling

As you sit out on the decking surrounded by nature, the breeze rustling through the trees, you want a book to match your mood; whether it’s a gripping thriller you can’t put down or an illustrated guide you can dip in and out of. Our reading list combines time-honoured classics and debut novels, gripping thrillers and delightful non-fiction titles, and provides suggested reading for all ages – all with a connection to nature and the landscape.

Reading for the children

Here is a selection from the much-loved Ladybird series, perfect for pre-schoolers and children up to 6 years old.

A Little Guide to Trees – a gorgeous book to help your children identify the trees around them.

The Tale of Peter Rabbit – No nature-inspired reading list for children would be complete without this classic tale about the mischievous rabbit and his adventures in Mr McGregor's vegetable patch.

For older children, the Puffin books offer wonderful new titles along with enduring classics. Here is our selection:

Swallows and Amazons – The famous coming of age tale about summer adventures and sleeping under the stars. The latest film version is just hitting cinemas!

Danny the Champion of the World – This Roald Dahl classic remains more firmly in this world than any of his other stories, and is as captivating a read for parents as it is for children.

The Great Escape – A wartime tale of three pets, separated from their owners, and their fight for survival as they flee to the countryside.

Books to keep the teenagers reading

Teenagers are looking to escape from the hum-drum of their lives and our recommended books will transport them to other worlds – and keep them off the internet for a few hours!

Riverkeep – A new release, this other-worldly fantasy has been compared to The Lord of the Rings.

Z for Zachariah – A powerful post-apocalyptic drama in which a 16 year old’s sensitivity and love of nature is set against her oppressor’s desire to control.

The Circle – A timely book, more suited to older teenagers and young adults, which may well make them question their reliance on the internet and social media.

Holiday reading for the adults

Enjoy this mix of beautiful picture books for those snatched moments to yourself and absorbing novels for when the other half takes the kids off to Go Ape for the afternoon.

Cabin Porn – Excuse the title and enjoy this lovely picture book focusing on the beauty of cabins – how does yours compare?

The Family Guide to the Great Outdoors – The perfect companion to your Forest Holiday. Learn to identify trees, build dens and light campfires. Put it all into practice on one of our popular Forest Ranger activities.

A Year in the Woods – The wonder and beauty of the changing seasons through the eyes of a forest ranger who is immersed in the natural world.

Black Rabbit Hall – Family secrets and loyalties, intrigue and lies and dramatic twists and turns. This page-turner of a novel with its glorious Cornish backdrop is a summer must-read, particularly if you are staying at Deerpark.

The Forest Retreat book corner

Thanks to our friends at Penguin, we have introduced reading corners into our Forest Retreats at all our locations. The kind folk over at Penguin have provided us with some of their most popular titles so that you can enjoy a peaceful hour or three sitting back with a good book and leaving all your cares behind.

Enjoy your holiday reading. Let us know what you think of our recommendations and tell us which other books you have enjoyed this summer.
