Babymooning in the Forest of Dean

Charlotte, from A Breath of Fresh Air, recently stayed at Forest of Dean in Gloucestershire for her very first babymoon. Here, with her husband Robin and dog Aya, she tells us about her relaxing stay...

"The babymoon. I’d heard a lot of people talk about these and was curious. I felt that if everyone else was having one then I probably deserved to join in with the trend.

A babymoon meant slowing down for my husband, Robin, and I. Not the action-packed itineraries, with lots of outdoor adventures and an evening wine or two. A babymoon meant relaxation, early bedtimes, watching films without that guilty feeling, delicious foods, and a more nurturing approach to travel. Forest Holidays was the obvious choice for us, after all, you really can do as little or as much as you want.

Aya

For us, a UK holiday just wouldn’t be the same without our gorgeous yellow Labrador Aya. From the moment she steps inside a Forest Holidays cabin she knows she’s in for a good week; spying squirrels and appreciating lovely walks exploring the beautiful countryside is all part of the fun.

We arrived at Forest of Dean at 2pm and enjoyed an early check in so that we could settle in and relax, making ourselves thoroughly at home in our cosy cabin for the next few days. There’s something so calming about sitting and watching the forest in its natural glory through the floor to ceiling window in the living room. Time almost stands still.

Exploring the local area

We opted for some beautiful scenic walks, taking in the river at Symonds Yat. There’s a great little spot to simply watch the river meander past you at The Saracens Head. It’s in a spectacular position on the east bank of the River Wye, where the river flows into a steep wooded gorge. They rustle up a hearty lunch and you can soak up the atmosphere as walkers, cyclists, canoeists, and fishermen venture in and out of the pub.

Charlotte, Robin, and Aya

Just a few miles down the road we uncovered the Sculpture Trail; it features forest-inspired work by local artists.

Monmouth is just a stone’s throw from the cabins at Forest of Dean. It’s a quaint little market town well worth a visit and we stumbled across a cute little tea shop for afternoon tea. I even sampled some of the best red velvet cake I’ve ever eaten and will probably be dreaming about that for months to come!

Spa in the comfort of the cabin

In-cabin spa treatment

Forest Holidays offer in-cabin spa treatments for all. A luxury that you just can’t miss when you’re on a babymoon. Julie, one of the therapists, was a joy to have around for a couple of hours.

The cabin becomes a mini spa sanctuary; this is the best part of it for me as you don’t have to venture back out after your treatment. The mum-to-be package is two hours. Those two hours feel just right and Julie left me feeling thoroughly relaxed and free from aches and pains.

Ready for the next adventure

Thank you Forest Holidays. We’ll never forget the lie in’s and the late breakfasts, the gentle walks around some of the most stunning British countryside and the ultimate pampering session with the lovely Julie. You left us feeling chilled and ready for our next adventure."

Thank you Charlotte! If you'd like to follow in Charlotte's footsteps and try a babymoon for yourself, you can book your break at forestholidays.co.uk/book.
