Wildlife & nature

At Strathyre you'll find some of the most unique wildlife in the UK

  • Scots pine

    Scots pine

The woodland surrounding Strathyre supports a varied selection of trees, providing important habitat for many species of fauna including some real rarities. One tree to look out for is Scotland’s national tree, the Scots pine. The UK’s only native pine, it keeps its needle like leaves all year round. You may see signs of a red squirrel having nibbled the seeds from the pinecones beneath the trees.

  • Red Squirrel

    Red Squirrel

Scotland, and Strathyre in particular is the stronghold for a number of species that are rare in the rest of the UK, the red squirrel being one of them. One of the UK’s best-loved mammals, the increasingly rare, but beautiful red squirrel has a russet coat with a white chest. The best time to spot them is morning or late afternoon. Other fauna to keep a look out for are the frequently visiting pine marten, red deer and Golden eagles.
