  • Family days out

    Family days out

While at Keldy, take the opportunity to spend a day in York, where the kids will love the exciting Jorvik Viking Centre, the scary York Dungeons and a thrilling walk along the city walls. York Maze has enough attractions for a family day out and, for some forest adventures, take the tribe to Go Ape at Dalby Forest.

  • History and heritage

    History and heritage

Yorkshire’s history can be discovered throughout the county, from the Bronze Age burial mounds in Dalby Forest to the Jorvik Viking Centre in York where the story of the Viking invasions is told; from the haunting Medieval ruins of Rievaulx Abbey at Helmsley to the 18th century splendour of Castle Howard. For more recent history, detailing life in wartime Britain, visit the Eden Camp Museum.

Cities, towns and villages

Pickering is the closest town to Keldy and along with Ryedale's other towns of HelmsleyKirkbymoorsideMalton and Norton, it has independent shops, art galleries, excellent restaurants, and a host of festivals and special events. Pickering is also at the end of the North Yorkshire Moors Railway line. Catch the steam train to Goathland, where you can step off at Hogsmeade Station from Harry Potter and walk through Aidensfield from TV’s Heartbeat. For the ultimate city trip, head to York, which manages to combine olde worlde charm with a cosmopolitan air.

One of my favourite woodland areas at Keldy is on the red route looking towards the Forest Ranger hut where the sun comes through the trees its picture perfect!

    Outdoor adventures

Take to the great outdoors in Yorkshire. Explore Dalby Forest, for woodland walks, children’s play areas and some history along with your coffee and cakes at the Visitor Centre. Discover the natural havens protected by Yorkshire Wildlife Trust or wander through RHS Gardens Harlow Carr, where the 68 acres include mixed woodlands and wildflower meadows. Go up a gear with some off-road adventures at Yorkshire Outdoors, enjoy a swing in the trees with your tribe at Go Ape or drop to ground level for York Maze, the largest maize maze in the UK.

  • Rainy day activities

    Rainy day activities

If the Yorkshire weather is proving less than predictable, take a journey through time with the North Yorkshire Moors Railway on a steam train that stops at Goathland – or Aidensfield in TV’s Heartbeat. If it rains at the seaside, head for Scarborough’s Sealife Centre. Whatever the weather Castle Howard, one of Britain’s finest stately homes, has lots to enjoy, or head out for a day in York, where the rain won’t stop you at the Jorvik Centre and the York Dungeons. If you love adventure, you'll love Alpmare UK. A waterpark like no other, Alpamare Scarborough offers some of the best waterpark rides in the UK.
