Forest secrets uncovered

Biofluorescence is a hidden secret that occurs when certain species absorb one wavelength of light and emit another.

When viewing this under UV light, you’ll see the natural reaction taking place as luminous colours brighten the forest.

The science behind biofluorescence is still being explored, but research shows certain species create this magic-like reaction as a sign of camouflage, warning, or even a mating ritual! Our Forest Rangers are learning more about this fascinating spectacle as they use specialist equipment to help you spot some of our nocturnal residents.

Here are 3 things you may discover on your next forest getaway:

  1. Bug Vision – See the forest in a whole new light – just like many insects living amongst the trees do! The neutral tones seen during the day may appear in shades of blue, red or even purple!

2. Natures Trail – Keep an eye out for where you think bees may have buzzed or butterflies may have fluttered – as the process of pollination is another cause of this natural wonder, especially for trees and plants.

3. Hide and Seek – If the Owls are hiding and Deer have settled in for the night, there will always be something to see when you view the forest in Ultraviolet - no matter the weather or season.
