At Blackwood Forest you'll find some of the most unique wildlife in the UK
Wild Strawberry
Blackwood is spectacular throughout all the seasons but is particularly beautiful in autumn, when the beech trees display a wonderful palette of oranges and reds. A plant to look out for in the spring and summer months is the delicate wild strawberry, which produces small white flowers followed by fragrant bright red berries. Its leaves are also a very important foodplant for the caterpillars of grizzled skipper butterflies which can be spotted in Blackwood Forest.
Purple Emperor Butterfly
Often overlooked, insects can be some of the most beautiful animals in the woodland. Blackwood Forest is home to many species of butterflies and moths including some of the UKs largest and rarest, like the Purple Emperor butterfly and the spectacular Clifden Nonpareil moth with a wingspan of nearly 10cm!
The majestic Purple Emperor can be elusive but will be a real thrill if you manage to spot one flying high in the canopy.
