Things to do in Wales

There are so many exciting things you can do on a day out in Wales it’s almost impossible to select the highlights. With unique attractions to enjoy, museums and castles to discover and a natural playground for outdoor adventures, this amazing country is full of possibilities. Here are few of our favourites, including things to do in Wales with the kids and free things to do in Wales.

Book your break in Wales

1. Take a train up into the clouds

Reach the highest summit in England and Wales the easy way, on the Snowdon Mountain Railway! One of the most spectacular train routes in the world, this is one of the best things to do in North Wales and will make memories for a lifetime. Open mid-March to October.

2. Climb the Welsh 3 peaks

If you are up for a challenging outdoor activity in Wales, climb the three peaks: Snowdon, Cadair Idris and Pen y Fan. It’s possible to do in a single day but even if you take two or three days, it’s a rewarding outdoor adventure.

3. Visit an enchanting Italianate style village

Portmeirion is a little piece of Italy dropped onto the northwest coastline of Wales. Designed as an Italianate village in the 1920s and built from scratch, it delights at every turn, with colourful architecture, landscaped gardens, independent shops and restaurants and even a sub-tropical forest.

4. Go trampolining…underground

Head for Zipworld Slate Caverns at Blaenau Ffestiniog for one of the most surreal things to do in North Wales. Bounce Below is an enormous underground playground with nets, slides and trampolines, which the children will absolutely love.

5. Explore the great castles of Wales

From the medieval beauty of Conway Castle, built by Edward I over 700 years ago, to the powerful fortress of Caernarfon Castle, where Prince Charles became Prince of Wales in 1969, the history of Wales is written into its great castles.

6. Discover the industries that shaped Wales

Much of Welsh history and heritage is wrapped up in the story of mining and quarrying. From the vast coal mines in valleys of South Wales to the thousand year old slate quarries in the north, it’s a history that you can discover at the Big Pit Museum in Blaenavon and National Slate Museum in Llanberis. Both are free things to do in Wales.

7. Ride on a steam train

Stay at Beddgelert and you can hop on a Ffestiniog and Welsh Highland steam train right beside our cabin location. Travel to the seaside at Porthmadog or Caernarfon, Zipworld at Blaenau Ffestiniog or one of the many pretty villages of Snowdonia, for a great day out in Wales.

8. Go on an island adventure

There are many outdoor activities in Wales based around the 870-mile coastal path. For a family day out, hit the coastal path at Newborough Forest in the south of Anglesey. Cross onto the tidal island of Llanddwyn, a beautiful spot for a picnic, with views across the Menai Strait, a 19th century lighthouse and an ancient ruined chapel.

9. Make a splash with white water rafting

Get soaking wet at the National Whitewater Rafting Centre near Bala, where you can go white water rafting, gorge walking or canyoning, or push the boat out with an Orca Adventure on a two-person inflatable.

10. Go green at the Centre for Alternative Technology

For a great day out in Wales, packed with fun things to do for the kids and the adults, visit the Centre for Alternative Technology just outside Machynlleth. Learn how renewable energy can be harnessed and see the latest green technologies in action.

11. Head for the beach

Wales is blessed with many spectacular beaches, from Rhossili Bay on the Gower in South Wales to Shell Island, near Harlech in Snowdonia. Head to Anglesey for quiet beaches with soft sands, Abersoch for watersports and Tenby for old fashioned bucket and spade fun.

12. Enjoy some forest downtime

Stay at our cabins in the forest clearing at Beddgelert and soak up the atmosphere with nature all around you. Enjoy an in-cabin spa treatment after your outdoor adventures in Wales, or cosy up in front of the log burner with our in-cabin entertainment package.
