Protecting our natural environment

The natural environment is central to the Forest Holidays experience and we recognise our responsibility to protect it. Our 10 UK holiday locations are designed, built and managed with sensitivity to their forest setting, incorporating eco-sensitive features and best practice in order to limit our environmental impact. We are part owned by the Forestry Commission and share with them a responsibility for sustaining and conserving our forests for the enjoyment of everyone, now and into the future.

Our eco-tourism awards

Forest Holidays are members of the Green Tourism Business Scheme, the certification scheme for sustainable tourism in the UK. All of our locations are independently monitored on aspects such as recycling, energy usage and biodiversity. As a result of our membership we have introduced many new environmentally friendly initiatives, including having “green champions” on-site, creating bug hotels and bat boxes, and installing daylight sensors on our external lights. Our locations have all attained either Silver or Gold awards, including our head office in Derbyshire.
We're proud to offer eco-senstitive holidays

Managing the day to day environment

When you stay with us you will see that we are environmentally aware in the way we manage our locations on a day-to-day basis. We have recycling schemes at all our locations, efficient and eco-friendly heating to keep your luxury cabin cosy and, at the Forest Retreat shop, bio detergents for your washing and dishwashers. We also stock plenty of local fresh produce – which not only supports local businesses but also reduces our carbon footprint.

Built with the environment in mind

We build our locations from scratch and so we are in complete control of their environmental impact and this is a key focus.

Our cabins are designed by award winning architects Holder Matthias to BREEAM specifications, BREEAM being the body that sets the standard for best practice in sustainable design. This means that our cabins benefit from the latest eco-sensitive thinking and boast features like foundations and roofing that allow rainwater to flow straight back into the forest floor and insulation of the highest specification.
