7 Romantic ideas for Valentine’s Day and beyond

Valentine’s Day is almost upon us and there is so much love in the air that we have been moved to romantic thoughts of our own. Here are some ideas to warm your lover’s heart.

Romance is a cabin for two, deep in the forest, logs piled on the wood-burner, champagne on ice and a romantic film. That’s a Forest Holiday, of course. But there are so many other opportunities for romance around each of our locations that we feel compelled to reveal a few of our favourites.

1.    Stargazing in Scotland

Our kind of stargazing involves a hot tub and wine! At Strathyre or Ardgartan Argyll, on a clear night you can lie back in your outdoor hot tub and be blown away by the sheer beauty of the night sky. This month, Jupiter is spectacular, look for the great red spot at certain times, (Valentine’s Night at 10.22pm).

2.    A steam train journey in Yorkshire

Stay at Cropton or Keldy cabins and take the North Yorkshire Moors steam train from Pickering to Whitby. Dine in style in the Pullman car as the glorious moorland landscape flashes past. At Whitby, climb the 199 steps to the mystical hill top Abbey, dive in to the Duke of York for drinks and round a perfect day off with fish and chips at the harbour side. Then steam your way back for a romantic evening in your cosy cabin.

3.    Walk with hawks at Sherwood Forest

Get up close and personal with magnificent birds of prey in the magical setting of Sherwood Forest. After meeting the birds – hawks, owls and falcons – walk through the woods with the hawks. Learn some falconry techniques and fly the birds. Watch in awe as they perform amazing aerobatics, swooping low and flying though tiny gaps. A shared experience you will cherish forever.

4.    Visit Tintern Abbey in Gloucestershire

The setting is pure romance. A ruined Cistercian abbey framed by the rolling hills of the Wye Valley, Tintern Abbey is set apart, a step away from the busy world. Walking arm in arm through the ruins at this time of year, you may not see another soul, but you will feel an atmosphere of peace and serenity which will stay with you back at your Forest of Dean cabin.

5.    A romantic woodland walk at Thetford Forest in Norfolk

Any forest walk is romantic but Thetford Forest makes it into the Forestry Commission’s top 10 romantic walks list. Head for Lynford Arboretum, where the 200 species of tree include an ancient oak tree, thought to be 350 years old – the perfect place for a proposal? A short drive back to your cabins at Thorpe Forest for a champagne toast.

6.    Tea for two in Winchester

Winchester is one of those quintessentially English towns that ooze romance. Meander through the quaint streets and explore the cathedral, where the queen of romantic fiction, Jane Austen is buried. Then take tea for two in the piano lounge at the Winchester Hotel before returning to your Blackwood Forest cabin for drinks in the hot tub.

7.    Cornwall in the Winter

Cornwall in the summer is for families and friends, but Cornwall in the winter is for lovers. Wrap-up-warm walks along rugged coastal paths, deserted beaches where you can carve your love into the sand, the haven of a warm, steamy beach café serving comforting stews and delicious hot chocolate. Head south from Deerpark to Seaton beach, where the Seaton Beach café is almost in the sea. Romantic heaven.
