Board games for every occasion

Long dark nights and winter days offer the best excuse to snuggle up indoors with the perfect movie, book or board game, and spend some precious time with your loved ones.

Did you know there has been a huge increase in board gaming over the past five years? Experts predict the global board game market will be worth more than £9bn by 2023. More friends and families are choosing to switch off the technology and enjoy some good old-fashioned fun in the form of playing together.

Although board gaming has been a firm favourite past time for hundreds of years, the resurgence in popularity has led the way for many toy and game companies to invest in creating brand new board game experiences, and these now feature alongside such classics as Rummikub and Othello. There’s a board game for everyone and plenty of fun to be had whatever your age.

If you visit one of Forest Holidays 11 locations across the UK, you'll find a number of John Adams games and puzzles to play with by hiring one of the gaming crates available from the Forest Retreat. We’ve been working with Forest Holidays for the past two years, to offer family play experiences that enhance your break away.

We at John Adams are really passionate about promoting family play, and the importance of carving out time away from busy lives, to focus on the people you love spending time with the most. It’s an old but true adage that children grow up way too fast, and at the same time many parents comment on the occasional “I’m bored” days that seem to go on forever. Board games offer an all-inclusive guilt-free way to pass the time that parents, grandparents and children can all enjoy together.

Here at John Adams we have compiled a list of our favourite games for you to enjoy.

Rummikub is one of the UK’s best-selling board games and has been enjoyed by families for generations – in fact it celebrates its 70th birthday in 2020. The Classic version of the game is played with 106 numbered tiles, and the object of the game is to be the first player to place all the tiles from their rack onto the table, shouting “Rummikub”. The Rummikub Word version requires players to form the longest possible words to score the most points.

Othello is another classic board game. This two-player strategy game is perfect for older children and adults to enjoy, and takes a minute to learn and lifetime to master! Players must trap and capture their opponent by placing their icon black and white disks on the board.

Linkee is a super-simple, shouty-out quiz game with a twist. The twist being you don’t win by answering the questions but by working out what the four answers have in common, and shouting “Linkee” before anyone else. The game is for 12+ and for 2-30 players, there is even a Dinkee version for children 8+ too.

Tetris Speed is based on the much-loved classic retro video game. Players must test their reactions in a round of fast-paced action where each card shows the next Tetrimino shape to be played. Each player must race to play the matching card in their own hand, keeping complete focus at all times!

The Rubik’s Cage is a fast-paced, fun game of strategy, created by the company behind the world famous Rubik’s Cube. The aim is to get three cubes in a row but watch-out as players can twist, turn and flip the cage to re-shuffle and deter their opponent. The player with the most rows wins.
